Book Review - The Danger Gang by Tom Fletcher
Franky and his new friends are all about weird and strange happenings, and together they form the Danger Gang and, of course, that's when things start to get really freaky...
The Danger Gang is an amusingly written and a funny, articulate read, by Tom Fletcher! Franky can’t wait to move to his new town – although he wishes he didn’t have to leave his best friend Dani behind. But everything changes after the storm, when strange green lightning and powerful thunder crash down on the town. From that night on, the kids who live on Franky’s street start to change. One by one, they become a little odd. A little unusual. A little… magical. Franky’s always wanted to be part of an amazing gang – just like his hero, super-spy Zack Danger! And soon, he realises that there’s real danger in store for himself and his new friends. And so, the Danger Gang is born…
Summary
The book starts off with a seemingly normal beginning, Informing the readers about who Franky is and his best friend Danika, who he is writing letters to throughout the book. Franky is very sad to be leaving his town and moving to his new home in a place called Freaky.
Here he deeply elaborates on how his room is the worst and he doesn’t like it one bit. Things get worst when valentine’s day strikes like they often do, and he is embarrassed beyond belief.
However, things really start to take a turn when a sudden and absolutely bizarre storm breaks over the block. Made or hail, lightning and most freakily – green storm clouds! It’s weirder and even more disastrous with him looking after his eager baby brother, with his dad watching the Big Game and his mother out for parents evening.
At this point, it’s safe to presume his new life is certainly not the one he imagined. But as they say, there is always a silver lining, and things start to brighten when he finds out many of his classmates live on the same street as him.
They start meeting up together in Franky’s treehouse, but not before some truly weird events take place. Such as a green flash of light under the water during a swimming lesson, and one of your classmates has turned into a shark, or that strange feeling as if someone is watching you…
Well, Franky and his new friends are all about weird and strange happenings, after all the town is called Freaky for a reason, and together they form the danger gang! Each kid gets a new power and of course, things start to get really freaky…
Review
The Danger Gang by Tome Fletcher and beautifully illustrated by Shane Devries a quirky book full of laughs and giggles. The innovative fact that Tome Fletcher made such a huge book, composed entirely out of letters to Danika from Franky is incredible.
And I was pleasantly shocked when I learned about this little detail, as it not only gives way from the fun and hilarious pictures depicting events that take place throughout the book, it also gives the reader a perspective of the best friend relationship between Danika and Frankie. Clearly showing how he shares everything with her!
Due to the fact that this is a children’s book, it might not be that noticeable at first, however, I thought it was worth mentioning.
“It’s Danger Time!”
-Franky Brown (The Danger Gang)
Another thing I feel is worth mentioning is that there are eight children in the Danger Gang (not including Franky and Danika), and each one, except Danika, has a super ability which was presumably caused by the great storm. However, a small detail that many people don’t notice is how perfectly his/or her ability corresponds with something prominent about their character.
For example, Eric Flipperson, who was the first member of the gang to find his magical abilities! It is made very clear that he hates swimming as he is not very good at it, however, upon touching the water he becomes a shark! Which in my opinion is very ironic, putting aside the fact that his last name is “Flipperson” which just adds to the ironic comedy through the entirety of this book!
Franky’s family also play big roles in the book, and his parents are anything but boring! With a mom who’s a teacher as well as an inventor who invented the Weather ray and other such incredulous machines. And a dad who is supposed and presumed to be quite boring and football-obsessed, however, turns out to be a secret agent in disguise!
And although Franky’s baby brother may not have any special abilities, he is still the reason the entire Danger Gang discovered they had powers in the first place! He is the cause of the ridiculous green storm outside their window!
This book is recommended for readers between the ages of 8 and 13. Great for both primary and secondary school. This book is the following genres; holiday, Christmas, fantasy, and children.
In conclusion, I give The Danger Gang by Tom Fletcher a Five out of five for hilarious ironic comedy!
