Book Review- Artemis Fowl and the Lost Colony by Eoin Colfer

Artemis Fowl and the Lost Colony by Eoin Colfer is the fifth book in the Artemis Fowl Series. What trouble has Artemis gotten himself into this time! ? Ten millennia ago, the fairy people were defeated in the great battle of mankind, forcing them to move underground. On the eighth family of fairies remained undefeated; the Demons. Big human haters, they are (thankfully) stuck in Limbo, a place that exists out of space and time. But now one demon has discovered the secret of the fairy people, and if the humans get hold of this information, the fairies are in big trouble. And as usual, Artemis Fowl is there and this time determined (to everyone’s shock) to save the day. Can he somehow help the demons and avert a full-blown human-demon war? However, he’s not the only one on their trail, meet Minerva Paradizo. Yet another child genius and not quite as demon friendly…

Summary

Demons are appearing randomly, all over the earth and of course, Artemis Fowl is somehow involved! Artemis is going through a phase in life which even he can’t ignore; Puberty. However, nothing is going to stop him from his latest scheme, which is exploring the appearance of demons on earth.

What he doesn’t know is that he not the only human to know about the eighth family of fairies. In this book, we get to meet Minerva Paradizo– a child genius who is somehow involved in the strange creatures. When former captain Holly Short and techy, Foaly get to know of Artemis and his meeting with a demon they immediately head above ground for some questioning.

From there Holly Short tells Artemis where the next demon sighting is predicted to appear. While the three wait Artemis Fowl, Butler and Holly Short. Butler sees a familiar-looking girl, the same girl he spotted during the demon’s first meeting. If there’s one thing Butler knows, it’s that this can’t be a coincidence. Of course, this girl is Minerva Paradizo

By the time he tells Artemis about this, it is too late, the demon appears again and in a blur of quictraps and movements, he is gone as quickly and strangely as he came.

Of course, since he appeared on a stage the audience thought it was all part of the act but young Master Fowl thinks otherwise. It’s not like the mud boy to manic, all he does is get up and cheer her on, and she mouths two words- Artemis Fowl

Review

Artemis Fowl and the Lost Colony is the fifth book in the series, and one of my favourites.  Eoin Colfer has outdone himself, creating whole other island and species which we get to learn about and discover throughout the book. When you read about it at first you will find it very confusing and out of context, but as the plot progresses everything will slot into place.

After four books,  I think it’s safe to say that Artemis Fowl is a reformed criminal mastermind and is determined to help his friend and ally Captain Holly Short. The child genius thinks this is a very normal scenariowithout any main villains such as Opal, all he needs to do is come up with a relatively simple plan to capture the demon and that’s that. But what he doesn’t know could hurt him…

In this book, Eoin Colfer introduces Minerva who is the same age as Artemis and just as smart. She is supposed to be Artemis’ love interest at the end of the book, however, is excluded from other books. This adds to the plot because Artemis is going through puberty and can’t help falling in love.

This makes it hilarious and intriguing to read about what he might do next. I am actually quite disappointed that she wasn’t included in other books as I feel she would have been a good addition to the characters and add some comedy to the entire plot. I cannot emphasize enough how much I am in awe of Eoin Colfer after reading this book as this book sets the scene for the rest of the series. It was a true pleasure to read!

“No matter what dimension you’re in, there’s a big-headed male trying to take over the world.”

One of the reasons I love Artemis Fowl book is because of the diversity and Feminism. Minerva Paradizo is not going to allow some random male to get away with the chance of winning a Nobel prize! Finally, a character with as hilarious reasons as Artemis.

These two are destined for each other, however, Eoin Colfer makes you think otherwise in Artemis Fowl and the Last Guardian. Eoin Colfer has constructed the whole thing beautifully, making us want to read more and more. The ending, however, is a real sad plot twist. But that’s for you to find out!

This book is recommended to readers between the ages of 9 and 15. It belongs to the following genres: Fantasy, Fiction science, children’s and adventure

Overall, I give Artemis Fowl and the Lost Colony a full five stars for an amazing storyline.
