Book Review- Artemis Fowl and the Atlantis Complex by Eoin Colfer

Artemis Fowl and the Atlantis Complex is the seventh book in the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer. Young Artemis has frequently used high-tech fairy magic to mastermind the most devious criminal activity of the new century. But Artemis is behaving strangely – he seems different. Something terrible has happened to him . . . Artemis Fowl has become nice. The fairies diagnose Atlantis Complex (that’s obsessive-compulsive disorder to you and me) – it seems dabbling in magic has damaged Artemis’ main weapon: his mind. Fairy ally Captain Holly Short doesn’t know what to do. The subterranean volcanoes are under attack from vicious robots and Artemis cannot fight them. Can Holly get the real Artemis back before the robot probes destroy every human and life form?

Summary

Artemis Fowl has been through a lot since first capturing Captain Holly Short, he went from Public Enemy no.1 to mud boy who saved the world a couple of times. So when Artemis calls commander Vinaya, Foaly and Holly Short to a meeting in Ireland, they notice something strange about him. He is later diagnosed with Atlantis Complex, whose symptoms include, OCD, being excessively in superstitions and in worst cases, a split personality.

Things get even worst when Foaly’s mars probe crash lands into the ship killing many agents and Artemis comes to his breaking point. In order to save him and get him out of danger while in trouble herself, Holly has no option but to shoot him out of the way; this is a grave mistake. After getting to his aid, Foaly, Holly and Artemis are the only ones left to observe the damage that the robots are doing. They need Artemis and his plans more than ever now!

Unfortunately for them, the electricity from the blast from Holly neutrino has unleashed Artemis’ split personality, Orion. Now let me tell you that even though Orion was in the same body as Artemis, and saw the same things Arty did, the two couldn’t have been more unlike. Orion’s personality was made of obsessive hormones towards Holly after their time in the past, magic stones, silliness and stuck in 19th century dialect.

There’s no way to switch them back for now as a new villain has it out for them yet again and without Artemis’s help! How will they escape and figure out the clues and what will Artemis’s mother say when she sees this mess…?

Review

Artemis Fowl and the Atlantis Complex is the second to last book in the Artemis Fowl series and can I just say I am still amazed by every book. How does Eoin Colfer find a new storyline for every book in the series ? This book was a real page-turner in which we get introduced to two new people/personalities. Turnball Root is one of them, he is Commander Root’s brother, a brother who is hungry for revenge on Holly and his late brother. We also get introduced to Orion who is Artemis Fowl’s split personality, and his reality and fiction are very different from ours. The Lockless Monster and Peter Pan are as real to him as to you and me. He is a comedy character who takes the place of Artemis for the majority of the book, adding some hilarious scenes where he really gets on Holly’s nerves.

I have never enjoyed the plot more, with Artemis missing for more than help the movie, Root having a brother who wants revenge and the entire thing takes place in Atlantis. We get to know more about the past and sad all over again for his death. Orion is very interesting and the total opposite of Artemis Fowl. Of course, Atlantis Complex doesn’t really exist because it’s a fairy disease which caused a pandemic in Haven city, much like COVID 19 on the “surface world”.

As I say with every book in this series, it is amazing to see his character development and the way Artemis and Holly work together, and their lack of surprise for their many life and death encounters. Then, on the other hand, we get to see the new co-ordination between Holly and Orion which adds many hilarious moments.

I am so satisfied with the outcome of this book, it has everything to look forward to-  thrill, action, sci-fi, fantasy and fiction making it an ideal children’s book. Everything you could possibly want !!

“So, what did you get for me?”

Angeline paused for a beat. “Jeans.”

“What?” croaked Artemis.

“And a T-shirt.”

I think my favorite part in the book was when Artemis crashes and gets his body back from his split personality Orion while having a casual and ridiculously funny conversation with his mother Angeline Fowl; Eoin Colfer is a literary genius! Artemis Fowl wearing genes …something I would pay money to see. This is a great book that I would love to re-read and fall in love with all over again!

This book is for readers between the ages of 11 and 15, according to the interest range. It belongs to the following genres: Fantasy, Fiction science, children’s, romance and adventure.

Overall, I give Artemis Fowl and the Atlantis Complex by Eoin Colfer a Five out of Five as it is funny, enticing and a book which I can re-read all over again!
